Up until a few years ago, the stretch of Turtle Creek that extends from Abers Creek to Trafford was the second most heavily fished trout stream in the state. When polluted water from abandoned deep coal mines entered the creek and resulted in a major fish kill in the early 1990's, the stocked trout fishing opportunities were suspended by the state until this year April 2001. Approximately 3,200 fish were stocked this year on April 11,2001 by the PA Fish & Boat Commission and TCWA members. Two weeks later the PFBC did an inseason stocking of about 2,300 trout. We would like to say thanks to all the volunteers who graciously helped us with these two big events.

One of the TCWA's major projects is to find efficient ways to improve the water quality of Turtle Creek. A committee of the TCWA meets monthly to discuss abandoned mine drainage issues in the watershed, to give direction on remediation projects, and to assist local, state, and federal agencies in the measures.
